With more than 60% of new podcasters claiming that there is a major discoverability issue in podcasting, it is important to know exactly what tool independent podcasters have to make sure people can find their show.
Which is why over the last week at the Outlier Podcast Festival I broke down a number of things that helped me when I was recording the Manga Sensei podcast out of the front room. Which went from 50 downloads a week to well over 100k.
Google is getting more involved in the podcasting game, and it is important for you to make it easy on Google to get your podcast sorted/indexed. That means adding blog posts, transcripts, YouTube links, and tagging your site correctly. This also means creating content that can be easily sorted by being keyword centric.
Most people don’t know this, however, you can request to get your podcast featured by Apple, this is done simply by filling out a form buried in Podcast Connect, and making sure you are prepared at least 2 weeks out. At LaunchPod Media, we are constantly in communication with Apple Podcasts or another podcast listening platform where we are trying to get our shows featured.
More important than being on the front page of Apple Podcasts however is making sure that people who would potentially listen to your podcast can find you when they use that handy search bar. If you name your podcast something cute like “TheDinklist Podcast” there is a very low likelihood that they will be typing that specific word into the search bar.
In other words, add useful, easy to understand, and relevant keywords into your title and/or episode name.
If you have a show that is still stuck in the <500 downloads per episode area we recommend contacting all the podcasts that rank for the word you would type into the search bar. On top of that, you need to make sure it is what your audience is looking for. That means asking them.
A great way to get free advertising is to go where your audience lives online as ask them what they don’t know. Reddit, Facebook Groups, Answerthepublic.com, or even Tumblr is a great resource for you and your audience. Just DO NOT ask your friends.
The great thing about this method also means that you can report back… Which is exactly what big podcasts cannot do. Creating a SpeakPipe on your website also helps.
Let’s admit it. Social matters and we all kinda suck at it. Which means you need to get on that ball and at least make sure you are sharing a lot and natively. Headliner.app, Pablo.Buffer.com, and Buffer will all make your life soooo much better.
As always, if you want to make your podcast take off but have questions feel free to contact us and we will do what we can to hook you up. Also, thank you to Ever and the who Outlier team. They are super dope.
