In recent months I have been trying to create a way to translate the power of podcasts into the equivalent ‘old school’ marketing methods.
While there is no direct equivalent of the podcast 10+ years ago, there is an interesting relation to email marketing.
Back in the day, Email marketing was the holy grail of engagement and advertising. I remember my mom being more excited about emails than getting a letter. Email was quick, easy, and efficient. That was until those stupid chain letters and spam became a thing. In other words, poor marketers ruined everything for everyone. Jerks
In the modern world, the only thing worse than spam is Youtube Red/Premium. Which will not leave anyone alone. That being said, with the evolution of Facebook, content marketing and even SEO link building, marketers are slowly learning to put things people actually want to see alongside things that are choosing to see. Well done capitalism.
However, like all things each platform and marketing method has its day in the sun before we just get sick of it. Just ask any member of Gen Z if they get on Facebook. On the same token, the modern-day newsletter, may not be in your inbox. Instead, it may be sitting as a notification on your phone or smart speaker.
In the modern world, speed and ‘multitasking’ is more important than most anything. The time and concentration it takes for people in the world that we live in, audio has become more powerful than people would like to believe. In fact, more than half of all search is now voice, and the newsletter that you made so pretty on Wix.com is falling behind that little podcast on Spotify.
In fact, your podcast may have better most people listen to the majority of the podcast they open. On top of that, they tend to listen all the way through. Not just scanning it for some information, but actually be engaged in the content they are absorbing. For podcast listeners, this may seem super obvious, but the engagement and time spent on a podcast usually outweighs the alternative potions of not only email but also of Facebook ads and even youtube videos.
For a world and internet overflowing with garbage and spam, be something different. Your brand and image deserve to be something more than just another email blast.
